Vego's Classic Series: Perfect Heights for All Gardening Levels

When it comes to gardening with raised garden beds, the options are practically endless. After years of trial and error in the garden, and getting my hands into the dirt, Vego Garden’s Classic Series has since become one of my go-tos. For Starters: The 11" Tall Bed

Perfect For: First-timers, balcony gardeners, and those working with a tight budget or limited space. It's also ideal for creating dedicated herb or flower zones right on top of your existing lawn or soil. This height is great for plants that don't send their roots down too deep. You can create a lush, productive garden, but you'll want to be strategic as well.

Try planting a compact Roma or cherry tomato plant in the center of your bed. Surround it with oregano, basil, and thyme. Finally, line the edges with onions or chives. This is everything you need for a homemade pizza in one place. The 11" depth is perfect for herbs and shallow-rooted veggies too.

This height is also good for planting fast-growing greens like loose-leaf lettuce, arugula, or spinach. You can sow them in succession every two weeks—for a continuous harvest all season long. The shallow depth encourages quick growth and easy harvesting.

Just Right: The 17" Tall Bed

Ideal For: Almost everyone, honestly. This is the workhorse of the garden and Vego’s most popular height for good reason. It offers the perfect balance of generous root space and ergonomic comfort, saving your back without requiring a huge amount of soil to fill.

This depth allows most common vegetables to develop strong, extensive root systems, with better access to water and nutrients, which translates to healthier plants and bigger harvests. It’s deep enough to provide excellent drainage while retaining moisture during hot spells.

Plant two to three different types of peppers (such as jalapeños and bell peppers) towards the back of the bed. In the center, stake a couple of tomato varieties. Now, tuck in some cilantro at the back. The 17" depth gives the tomatoes and peppers the deep root run that they prefer.

Elevated Ease: The 32" Tall Bed

Ideal For: Gardeners with back or knee issues, those with mobility problems, or anyone who wants to garden standing up. It’s also a fantastic solution for placing on a patio or driveway.

This is essentially a giant container garden. You have complete control over the soil, and it’s completely isolated from poor native soil or pests (with Vego’s galvanized steel floor). The soil volume is enlarged, which means consistent moisture and room for even the most ambitious plants.

Plant a small apple or pear tree in the center of the bed as a focal point. You can grow perennial herbs like rosemary and sage around it. In the remaining space, rotate through your favorite garden greens and herbs. The deep soil will insulate the tree's roots over winter.

Try growing deep-rooted crops like carrots and parsnips in this bed. You can also add a couple of dwarf fruit bushes like citrus or blueberries. The 32" depth is a true game-changer for root crops.
