Plastic Source
Foodcube Plastic is food grade,
free from contaminants and ideal for growing food.
Foodcube and Foodcube Slim products are made from food grade polypropylene, 80% of which is recycled material sourced from the confectionary industry in Australia.
Pure polypropylene is used in a variety of packaging products due to it’s food-safe properties, and is recyclable at the end of product life.
The source material is a waste stream from the confectionary industry, namely the offcuts from the wrapping process that has been collected, diverted from landfill and repurposed into making our products.
Biofilta’s manufacturer purchases this material in bales and blends it with 20% virgin polypropylene to provide strength, and UV stabilisation, then converts it into pellets that are then injected in to our product moulds under high heat and pressure.
As part of our quality assurance, our plastic has been tested by ALS Industrial in Melbourne to ensure that there are no impurities or heavy metals.
Samples were analysed at the molecular level by Fourier Transform Infrared Analysis (FTIR) and the results matched against library reference spectra for polypropylene. After testing, ALS confirmed that the material is polypropylene and contains no contaminents or other polymers.
As part of our Quality Assurance, Biofilta will routinely have the feedstock material independently tested to ensure that there are no contaminants in the plastic, and to ensure that the product is fit for purpose of growing great food.
