How Raised Beds and Greenhouses Help with Drought

For the modern gardener, dealing with drought has shifted from an occasional summertime headache to a perpetual state of emergency. As scorching heat waves besiege much of the US and Europe, particularly the drought-stricken Western United States, water becomes a valuable resource. 

To the wilted plants experiencing days of drought and the lonely hearts crying for rain, water is no longer a mere element that they take for granted. But with the simple addition of shade cloths, the internal temperature drops. Filtering the harsh midday sun keeps your plants from entering survival mode, preventing them from stressing out and drinking excessively just to stay cool.

At first glance, raised beds might seem counterintuitive during a drought. Because their sides are elevated and exposed to the ambient air, they can actually dry out faster than native ground soil if left bare. However, raised beds are the secret weapons against drought because of how you can manage the environment within their borders.

The Sponge Effect

During a severe dry spell, native ground soil behaves terribly. It becomes heavily compacted, bakes into a hard crust, and often becomes hydrophobic – meaning it repels water, causing precious rainfall or hose water to run off into the driveway rather than sinking in.

In a raised bed, gardeners are granted control over the soil quality. By filling your beds with a premium blend of organic matter, nutrient-rich compost, and water-retaining components like coconut coir or peat moss, you create a soil sponge. This engineered mix holds onto every single drop of water you give it, storing moisture deep at the root level where plants need it most.

Easier to Mulch Deeply

Ask any seasoned drought gardener for their best advice, and they will tell you: mulch is the first line of defense against soil evaporation. Though often cast away as superficial decoration, a good layer of mulch can actually reduce your overall water usage by as much as two-thirds. 

Because raised beds feature defined, rigid borders, they act like perfect containers for deep mulching. It makes dumping a thick, 3-to-4-inch layer of straw, wood chips, shredded leaves, or grass clippings over the edge of the frame an easy endeavor. This heavy blanket insulates the engineered soil beneath, keeping it shielded from the sun.

Perfect for Drip Irrigation

Overhead watering with a traditional sprinkler is incredibly wasteful during a drought; a massive percentage of the water evaporates into the air before it ever permeates the soil. Raised beds are ideal for targeted, efficient watering systems. Their geometric layouts allow you to easily snake drip irrigation lines or soaker hoses directly across the soil surface, placing them where the plant roots reside. Drip systems are so efficient that during times of drought, many water utilities exempt them from water restrictions. 

Helpful Additions to the Garden

Sprinklers are out, but convenience isn’t. One of the best manual tools for watering is a retractable hose – it avoids the temper tantrum that comes about when dealing with a tangled hose. To get the timing right, use a digital water timer to keep your plants hydrated automatically, with no manual watering required.
